As the spring arrives, it marks the beginning of track and field season. With the athletes ready to compete, the team has achieved many things in the past three invitationals that Edgewood participated in.

In just the first couple meets they have had, with many players hitting their PR and breaking school and even meet records. After the three previous invitationals, the girls team has a record of 23-4 while the boys have a record of 20-5. The two teams also have a combined seven meet records. Juniors Riley Payne and Chloe Meyer were also both named Cincinnati Enquirer Athlete of the Week after their last invitational.

Senior Jonathan Testas has been successful in this season thus far. Jonathan competes mainly in the high jump, placing third at the Mt. Healthy Owl Classic and first at the Oakwood invitational. “I’m proud of myself, but I still feel as if I can do better. For the whole team, I think we are looking really good so far,” said Jonathan, explaining his motivation and drive to do better as an individual on the team.

The team was also introduced to a new coach this season, Coach Frank Russo. Though his first year coaching was technically last year, his first full season as a coach is underway in 2021 since last season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Coach Russo is an experienced coach, as he previously coached at La Salle, and has high hopes for the team. “We’re making progress, overall we’ve had some outstanding individual and team performances,” said Coach Russo.

Coach Russo also described his passion for the sport and how he loves coaching and seeing athletes grow and improve: “My main goal for the season is to bring out the best in our athletes and staff.”
