The EHS Swim Team recently introduced two new coaches, head coach Lauren Butts and assistant coach Eden Secombe. Both coaches used to swim for Edgewood and are eager to start the new swim season fresh.
Coach Butts is returning to coach EHS. She was an assistant coach in 2022, assisting former head coach Amanda Dixon. However, Butts took a break for a year to focus on college. But now she’s back and ready to see the team succeed.
‘I loved swimming. It gave me a lot of passion just for other things in my life too. I think like through swimming I really found how to work hard and just how to be better at something,” said Coach Butts.
Coach Butts has said she has seen better technique since the swim season officially kicked off back in early November, despite issues with cardio and proper breathing in the past.
“As of right now, I see a lot of potential and a lot of improvement. I mean since the first practice everyone’s already getting faster, doing better.”
The coaches have stated they have high goals for this team and are looking forward to the process of seeing the swim team grow.
“My goal for the swim team this year is to get to Districts, to bring that fire, that passion back to the swim team,” Lauren said.
Morgan Young, a junior at EHS, had swam on the team for her freshman year and she’s ready to compete again despite not competing her sophomore year.
“My goals are to get my times a lot better than freshman year and just stay positive. Not overthinking what I’m swimming in the water. I do that a lot especially when I’m thinking about my times,” said Young.
Morgan said another one of her goals is to ensure the team stays positive and healthy without bringing anyone down.
Since last year, the team has also had new additions, one of which is freshman Olivia Garrett.
“I’ve always wanted to swim and I didn’t know Edgewood had a team up until I came to the open house and I saw sign-ups. And I just signed up for it,” said Garrett.
Being new on the team can be challenging but to Olivia, it hasn’t been hard at all.
“It’s not bad. I’ve been told I’ve been picking it up quickly which is good..everyone’s super friendly. I like everyone on the team.”
The EHS swim team’s first official meet of the season is an invitational meet at Preble County YMCA at 6 pm, on December 7th.
