Colin Chafin, Blake Hacker, Landen Stewart, and Chris Lahmann all play hockey… yes hockey. Although there is not an established team for the school, there are still students who currently play the sport for club teams in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas.
Colin Chafin is a Senior here at EHS. He has played for 10 years, starting his third-grade year. He currently plays for a local club team in Dayton. The season lasts from October to March.
“My dad introduced me to the game of hockey. Hearing stories from his playing days really motivated me to play, I thought it would be interesting to try it out and take his word for it. I ended up liking it a lot, and met tons of great teammates and coaches,” Chafin said.
Colin has developed a love for the game even though it is not a common high school sport around here.
“I’ve tried other sports over the years but nothing has matched the intensity and camaraderie of ice hockey,” Chafin said.
Chafin plans to attend Texas A&M to pursue a degree in Meteorology, while in school he hopes to play club hockey at the University. Before leaving for A&M, Chafin would like to see an EHS hockey club.
“I think it would be an amazing addition to the school’s athletic programs. It’s definitely a growing sport and worth the expenses for equipment. The game is very fast and physically competitive.”
Mr. Scott Clemmons is the Director of Athletics at EHS. Clemmons has personally never played but enjoys watching college and professional hockey.
“We have never had a team, I know we’ve had individuals that have played for clubs. I’ve never been approached by anybody to get a team going, but definitely something we could look into,” Clemmons said.
“I definitely see it becoming a sport at Edgewood very soon, especially because of the rinks being built in nearby Middletown,” Chafin said.
Locally, there are not too many schools that have hockey as a part of their athletics programs compared to Northern Ohio. 70 schools in Ohio are registered as an OHSAA hockey program.
“I’d be interested to see how an EHS hockey team would perform because you have schools like Talawanda and Moeller that are well-established programs,” Clemmons said.
“Policy is you’d have to be a club team for 3 years to show sustainability, third year we’d be able to implement it as an OHSAA sport at Edgewood.”

Great article! I did not know Edgewood had some hockey players in the district. Keep up the good work you all!
