An upcoming event Wednesday, May 15, 2024 Edgewood High School will host the annual senior carnival featuring a color throw, clap out and a newly added senior sunset to end the day. The seniors are going to start the day with the carnival at urban air, then be transported back to the school for the clap out and color throw then end their final highschool day with a sunset.
Senior and student council officer, Luke Halsey has shared what this experience means to him, “As seniors we have done so much throughout our 4 years of highschool, we have clapped out three classes of seniors before us and it’s our time to go out in the world with new experiences.” Luke said.
With the seniors sending off three classes before them, sticking with the tradition and going through the same experiences from prior years just in a new perspective.
Teacher Jill Domaschko, has seen this tradition for around 11 years “ The clap out is seniors line up in the gym while underclassmen and teachers line the hallways and clap as the seniors walk down the main hallways one last time, and all their family is outside to greet them. Then they walk down the main sidewalk to the grassy area on the side of the building to throw color packets on the count of three to celebrate their last day at Edgewood” Jill explained.
After the clap out it will be the last time the seniors will walk these halls before they start new paths in life whether it be college, the military, or any path they want to take, it is important that they get to roam the school on the final day.
The student council members decided to add a new sunrise. Both Jill and Luke explained what it was and what it meant.
“Student council wanted to do something different since they missed out on lots of stuff during their school years due to covid” Jill said.
During the seniors covid years 8th grade was cut short and didn’t get to experience a lot of traditions from past years including the Washington DC trip, 8th grade clap out, freshman year homecoming, as well as freshman orientation.
“As a student council officer they decided to change it because we started off our senior year with a sunrise to symbolize a new beginning or new day, and to end the year we decided to have a sunset to symbolize the end of the year or day” Luke said.
As a start of a new tradition and to be able to start the final year as a whole and to end it as a whole as well.
