Lady Cougars basketball player, Rylie Homan has broken an abundance of records this season including steals, assists, and 1000 career points.
Junior Evelyn Henson was ecstatic for Homan.
“ I was happy to see my teammate accomplish all of these goals first hand. It was definitely something you don’t see too often,” Henson said.
On December 16th, 2023, Rylie broke her first school record. She surpassed the previous steals record with 304 career steals (as of Feb.13).
“I knew I was capable of breaking these records, but I never really thought about them until I became closer to reaching them. I wish I could have broken the most steals in a game,” Homan said.
Rylie started off the new year with yet another record broken. On January 13, 2024, Homan reached 352 (as of Feb.13) career assists, breaking the previous record of 285 by Shivonne Garland.
“I knew I was close to breaking the steals and assist record. I didn’t really feel any pressure in the game but I did pass up a lot of my shots to my teammates in order to try and break the record,” Homan said.
Along with breaking these school records, Rylie also became one of only three women in school history to score 1000 career points. The last time a Lady Cougar reached this milestone was Jamie Bridge in 1997.
“I did expect to reach 1000 points, it felt very good to accomplish that goal,” Homan said. Rylie reached this record on January 20, 2024 at Waynesville High School.
“I play soccer, outside of basketball. I prefer basketball over soccer because it’s something I’ve always been passionate about since I was little. Soccer was to keep me active in the off-season, I enjoy playing soccer but basketball has always been something I put a lot of time into,” Homan said. Rylie didn’t just reach this milestone easily. All her life she has put work into her basketball career.
Defending, scoring, and assisting are all great qualities of a teammate, but Homan values another part of her game. Rylie’s mental strength was one of the key factors in getting her to where she is today.
“I’d have to say one of my strengths would have to be more on the mental side rather than physical, I’ve always been a player that doesn’t get shaken easily”.
