EHS senior football players went through a lot of emotions after beating Monroe High School 34-7 at their last high school home game. At the end of the game, with students standing on the field and “Boys of Fall” playing in the background, senior athletes walked their last lap around Kumler Field with tears in their eyes as the realization hit them that they had grown up much faster than they thought, and all the years of their childhood and teenage years were nearly over.
Senior placekicker David Rumpler found the season full of ups and downs.
“I’m not happy with how our season went, because I feel like we are better than how we played, and with two of our main players hurt, it was kind of hard on us. But I scored the record school punt, so I can’t complain about that” David said.
Two-way standout Brayden Smith had memorable individual moments throughout the frustrating season.
“I think we did bad at the beginning of the season and way better at the end, but I’m still not happy with how the season went. I think that, as an individual, I had a really good season” Brayden stated.
Walking out to the field, knowing they were getting ready to play their last game on their home field, senior players tried their hardest to soak it up.
“It felt like butterflies. Just, butterflies,” David said.
“ I just listened to music before the game to hype myself up, but I couldn’t think about how it was my last home game ever,” Brayden said.
Still trying to think about how real the ending of high school is for them, the boys try to imagine themselves in the future.
“ I feel scared to face the real world, but also happy,” David shared.
“I don’t know it hasn’t really even hit me yet, I don’t want to think about it,” Brayden said.
Maybe the adults were right when they always told teens not to rush growing up, because it comes fast enough.
