Week 5 may not have been a pretty night for the Edgewood football team, but for Robert Eggebrecht and the student section…it was electric! Robert decided to pull a new trick out of his sleeve and perform a cadence, drumming upside-down!
During the game against the Chaminade Julienne Eagles, a more than ordinary show was put on at halftime by junior Robert Eggebrecht, who has been a band member since sixth grade, and been on the varsity marching band since eighth grade. Normally, the band just performs their regular halftime show and nothing more, but last week Robert and the rest of the percussion decided to change it up a little bit and perform upside-down!
Junior, Kamdyn Buck was in the student section and enjoyed the performance.
“ I was in total shock and very impressed with his talents!” Buck said.
Robert got his motivation for performing this off of social media, and decided to try it himself.
“I’ve seen multiple videos of other high school bands playing that particular cadence upside-down,” Eggebrecht said.
Before he could astound the EHS Den, Robert first would have to get permission from Mr.Fields , the director of percussion for the Edgewood band.
“He thought it was a cool and fun idea, and was up for it as long as I was comfortable with it,” Eggbrecht said.
After getting permission from Mr.Fields, Robert began practicing.
“We tried it with just one person holding me but that was hard so we went to 2 people and it was much easier,” Eggebrecht said. “We only practiced 3 times.”
Even with a minimal amount of time to practice for this stunt, Robert still showed out!
“I was pretty nervous because it’s a risky move doing it in front of people,” Eggebrecht said.
The entire student section was watching, and the pressure was on.
“After Robert’s performance, the mood in the student section totally shifted and it was a very fun atmosphere to be a part of.” said Buck. The students loved the performance and the crowd was going wild.
“I thought it was great getting everyone hyped and I hope it transferred to the outcomes of our football game,” said Eggebrecht.
The performance was definitely a great experience for all involved and the students want to see it again during future games.
“I hope to see him perform this trick every game and maybe even see him perform this trick every game and maybe even see some other hidden drumming talents that he has.” said Buck.
“We are thinking about doing it with bass drums instead of the instrument that I play (tenors)” said Eggebrecht.
The upside-down drumming performance is a great part of the Cougar football atmosphere.
