Led by junior Trent Stewart’s 29th place individual finish, the Edgewood Boys Golf team secured seventh place at the OHSAA Sectional and ended their season.
The team’s 15 wins are the most wins in program history. Junior Robert Eggebrecht didn’t realize the team set a new wins mark.
“We had a successful year so I can see how we achieved that accomplishment,” Robert said.
Coach Jason Dunaway was in his first year as head coach. Stewart loves having Coach Dunaway lead the team.
“He is one of a kind and one of the best coaches I have ever had. He is knowledgeable about what he knows,” Stewart said.
After being in the SWOC for the last 11 years, this is the first year of the program in the SWBL.
Trent believes there is no difference between the leagues, the only change is the new teams to play.
This year’s team was more of a veteran-led group with Juniors Robert Eggebrecht, Trent Stewart, Cooper Chasteen, and Senior Kameron Buck.
“It was very nice to be able to see the same faces from year to year, and also being able to see the great progress we have made as a team,” Stewart said.
Trent’s best game this year was when he shot a 41 leading the Cougars to a narrow victory on the road against Monroe.
Carson Phillips led the Cougars this year with a 47.23 average which was good enough for 31st in the conference.
Going into the SWBL championship, Robert Eggebrecht shot a personal best of 40 strokes against Cincinnati Christian to lead the Cougars to their lowest match score of the year, a 178.
“I felt pretty good because when I shot the 40 everything was clicking but I did get lucky breaks,” Robert said.
Despite having a veteran squad the team is bringing back seven players to the team next year. Trent and Robert believe that the team is still young with higher expectations for the Cougars next year.
