In early July, Scott Clemmons was announced as the Athletic Director for Edgewood City Schools to replace Larry Cox.
Mr. Clemmons has been a part of the Edgewood community for as long as he can remember. He and his family grew up here, he started in kindergarten going to what is now the Edgewood Primary School.
In addition to being a part of the community for most of his life, he’s also been an intrical part of the coaching community as well.
“I have been coaching at Edgewood for 26 years overall, and that consists of 12 years of men’s varsity football”. However, he didn’t get his start in coaching at the high school level, he actually got his start in coaching at the middle school where he coached for a couple of years.
Mr. Clemmoms also taught at Edgewood for many years. He started his teaching career in 2008, and taught for 12 years as an intervention specialist in math. With his new position, he has since stepped down from teaching.
Moving forward, Mr. Clemmons has big plans for the athletic department. He plans to get more overall variety to all sports, create more public, more community outreach, and stay in touch with parents and students. “An athletic social media, creating a publication that our student-athletes here at Edgewood deserve”, are things he is excited to get into the works soon.
Coaching and having a family have helped Mr. Clemmons form a unique view of athletic directing.
“I played sports, I’m married, and I have children… I think before I was married and had children, as a young coach, I didn’t quite understand a parent’s perspective on things,” Clemmons said. “You can say “oh I understand”, but before you have children, you don’t.”
Students also have high hopes for improvements to sports at Edgewood. Sophomore Ella Crist has specific goal in mind for what she wants from the athletic department.
“ I want more messages to spread awareness for more sports,” Crist said.
Ella also hopes that there will be more opportunities for college recruitment through sports.
Senior Declan Hitte also agrees that more college recruitment would be beneficial to all sports. Being a varsity football captain, Declan says he thinks Mr. Clemmons is going to be a very good athletic director.
“Mr. Clemmons represents good tradition and family values here at Edgewood,” Hitte said.
Mr. Clemmons is still undecided if he will continue to coach now that he is the athletic director. For now, he is just finishing up this current season. “It’s kinda like I’m just in the moment”, said Mr. Clemmons.
